One could argue that Langa’s confusion at his mom’s mention of a "girl" might stem from his obliviousness - perhaps he never meant to say that he liked Reki in a romantic sense and his reaction confirms that his mind couldn’t have been further from the subject. When Reki and Langa finally reconcile, they don’t define their relationship as anything other than a friendship - although, interestingly enough, they don’t call each other "friend" either. However, nothing was explicitly said about it or confirmed by the creator.
Together with the "kiss scene" from Yuri On Ice, which is often talked about as an example of great queer representation in anime, this might be one of the most explicit queer scenes in a recent mainstream anime. When the episode aired, fans’ immediate response was one of puzzled awe. Even so, the tables were turned when, in Episode 8, Langa admitted to "liking" Reki. Apparently following in the steps of previous works, Sk8 the Infinity introduced a male protagonist duo with incredible chemistry in order to tease the potential of a gay romance, only to never realize it. Characters call each other "friends" even when their gestures and expressed feelings are openly sexual or romantic, and their interactions would never be considered platonic if they were of the opposite sex. The world of anime is full of what's often defined as "queerbaiting." Mainly concerning male characters, but not exclusively, it presents intense same-sex relationships that are romantic in everything but name. It didn’t seem enough, however, to convince viewers that this was a true coming-out scene.
Looking for advice about his fallout with Reki, Langa tells his mom that he "likes" him. Fans of Sk8 the Infinity had been wondering about a gay romance for weeks when Episode 8 came along, apparently confirming it.
